The Upstream Series: Diversifying Speakers in CX
About The Upstream Series
While 2021 presented many changes and challenges for those in customer-facing roles, the CXLife team wanted to spark a new type of change. We partnered with our parent company, Simplr, and our friends at Socialive to launch a new and exciting bi-monthly event, The Upstream Series.
This series is all about elevating historically underrepresented voices in CX. In offering a first speaking opportunity to diverse CXers, we hope to amplify their unique perspectives and reshape the speaker landscape. Register now for the first event themed around empathy in CX, which will take place on Tuesday, October 26 at 12 p.m. ET.
The Upstream Speakers
One of the main aims of this new event series was to address the critical lack of diversity in conferences and events. A 2019 analysis on the gender distribution of speakers at informational sessions reported a 34% female speaker representation at conferences and a staggeringly low 15% female speakers at summits. The same study reflects that these numbers have not significantly improved over the past few years. While there is much speculation about the reason for this dramatic speaker homogeny, it’s clear that an event’s attendee and industry impact hinges on prioritizing speakers of varied backgrounds and experiences.
For the first session in the series, we focused on highlighting the voices of women of color in customer experience roles. The speakers at the Empathy in CX session include:
- Keynote speaker Marjorie Abdelkrime, Head of Multi-Cloud at VMware
- Miché Barnett, Manager of CX and DEI Specialist at Drizly
- Angel Rogers, Head of Global Customer Success at Rockwell Automation
While the Empathy in CX event will spotlight women of color, we will invite novice speakers of other underrepresented backgrounds to present at future sessions. If speaking at a session is of interest, apply today or nominate someone you know here.
